Safety & Loss Control Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY

The Michigan Electric Cooperative Association is seeking a driven, versatile, and eager individual to join our team as a Safety and Loss Control Instructor. This individual will be instrumental in promoting safety awareness through a variety of programs throughout the state, ensuring safe work practices and compliance with state and federal regulations.

This position requires a considerable amount of travel throughout northern Michigan, so the candidate selected will have the opportunity to reside in the northern Michigan location of their choosing. And it isn’t called the Great Lakes State for nothing- there are lots of beautiful places to choose from!

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote and improve culture for safety awareness among member cooperatives and other safety program participants through a variety of programs to ensure safe work practices and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Provide annual instruction and certification on required training areas such as: safety and incident prevention, CPR, first aid and hearing conservation, pole-top and bucket truck rescue, and man lift rescue.
  • Research, teach and lead safety focused discussions in formal and informal settings.
  • Provide counsel to organizational managers on maintaining a culture that keeps safety first.
  • Develop and administer safety training in incident prevention programs as well as programs for on-site delivery.
  • Inspect member safety program participants’ facilities and equipment to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards
  • Participate in Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP) activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A degree in occupational or industrial health or related discipline is preferred, experience in on-the-job industrial safety may be substituted for some formal education.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, any required safety certifications.
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license is required.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in distribution power systems as a journeyman or first class lineman with varied experience in overhead and underground line construction, troubleshooting, equipment and operations.
  • Experience as a line foreman and/or supervisor is preferred.
  • Specific safety experience in an electric utility or an industrial organization closely related to the electric utility industry is preferred.

Abilities:

  • Manage and direct all areas of safety and loss control programs, working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Implement emergency work plans.
  • Conduct accident investigations and reporting.
  • Understand, support and enforce policies and procedures, especially as they relate to the safety function.
  • Public speaking, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills.
  • Effectively teach, coach and mentor, persuade and negotiate.
  • Must have a strong belief in the importance of the safety, training and loss control program.
  • Conduct equipment testing and field observations.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of MIOSHA, OSHA, NESC, FMCSA and other safety standards deemed applicable to the electric industry.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.  Able to use general office equipment and specific equipment related to position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Extensive (75%) travel throughout Michigan.
  • Some out-of-state travel.
  • Occasional lifting and moving of equipment over 50 pounds.
  • Must obtain National Safety Council First Aid and CPR instructor, or willing to obtain such certification within 12 months from date of hire. Certified Loss Control Professional (CLCP) or ability to acquire certification within 36 months from date of hire. Work to be performed both inside and outside the safety partner’s offices. Subject to call at any time. Attendance at seminars, conferences, and Members’ Annual Meeting as requested or assigned is also expected. Extra hours may be necessary during emergencies or when the workload demands.
  • Must attend continuing educational courses as deemed necessary.
