The Michigan Electric Cooperative Association (MECA) is excited to provide innovative safety training by leveraging virtual reality (VR) to provide zero-risk, immersive learning experiences for Michigan’s electric cooperatives. As electric co-ops continue to prioritize safety and efficiency, MECA’s VR training program is setting a new standard for preparing lineworkers for the challenges they face in the field.
A New Approach to Safety Training
Over the past six months, MECA has been rolling out its VR safety training program to Michigan electric cooperatives, starting with a soft launch at Cherryland Electric Cooperative. This phased approach allowed MECA to gather feedback from users and optimize the training experience.
“We’re thinking about future lineworkers,” said Safety and Loss Control Instructor, Tom Ulatowski. “Right now it’s finding the right users who can gain the most benefit and build their experiences before ever getting near a hot line.”
The current training module includes critical skills like operating a bucket truck, selecting proper personal protective equipment (PPE), and performing essential safety procedures like lockout/tagout on oil circuit reclosers (OCRs). One of the most impactful exercises involves responding to an overhead downed wire, where trainees must isolate the hazard and protect themselves and their crew, all within a safe, virtual environment.
Beyond the Basics: Expanding the Training Program
There are plans to expand the library with more complex situations, in collaboration with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). By simulating real-world conditions in a controlled environment, MECA aims to provide high-quality, hands-on training without the risks associated with live field exercises.
One of the key benefits of this program is the opportunity for cooperative feedback. MECA encourages line crews to share their insights after completing the VR exercises, fostering a collaborative learning environment. This feedback loop not only improves the training scenarios but also reinforces a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
The Future of Lineworker Training
The adoption of VR technology by MECA marks a significant step forward in lineworker training and development. By providing a realistic, risk-free training environment, MECA is not only enhancing the safety of its lineworkers but also driving innovation in the electric utility industry.
As MECA continues to build on this foundation, the goal is clear: to create a comprehensive VR training program that prepares Michigan’s electric cooperative lineworkers for the future. Whether it’s flying a bucket truck or performing complex safety procedures, the next generation of lineworkers will be trained to the highest standards, all thanks to the power of virtual reality.
